Aplia understands that the security of your personal information, problem and experiment results, and grades is important to you. We also understand that our continued success relies on both our ability to offer services to you in a secure manner as well as your responsibility in keeping all passwords secure. To assist us in offering web-based services in a secure manner, we employ a number of measures described below. These measures allow us, among other benefits, to attempt to (a) properly authenticate your identity when you access our services and (b) protect your information as it traverses the Internet between your personal computer and Aplia.
Student information is stored in a secured database designed to be accessible only by the Aplia application. Aplia does not store final grades or disciplinary records.
Aplia utilizes two different pieces of information to attempt to properly identify and authenticate you prior to allowing online access to our web-based services. The first piece of information needed is a user ID, which serves to identify you with Aplia. Your user ID is your email address. We use this address as your user ID to minimize the personal information we collect, ensure that your user ID is unique, and make it something easy for you to remember.
The second piece of information is a password to attempt to authenticate your identity - to try to prove you are who you say you are and not anyone else pretending to be you. Your password must be between six and twenty-five characters and should be something easy for you to remember, but hard for anyone else to guess. Aplia recommends you use something other than significant names (i.e., pet, family members), local sports teams, or other such easily guessed items. Don't share your password with anyone - except for logging onto the Aplia service and unless required by applicable law, Aplia will never request your password from you. If you have forgotten what your password is, click on the "Did you forget your password?" link on the Aplia Sign In page and you may request a message containing your password be sent to your email address.
To try to further protect you, a timeout feature is used. This feature is designed to automatically log you out of your current session after a one (1) hour period of inactivity on our site.
Aplia employs an additional protection mechanism known as a firewall to protect our computer systems and your information. Firewalls can be thought of as selective barriers designed to only let authorized traffic (i.e., you, our customer) through to Aplia's systems.
Aplia uses the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol to try to safeguard your sensitive personal information, including your credit card number, during online transactions. Using this widely accepted form of encryption, your transaction is delivered from your personal computer to the Aplia computer processing your request via a secured, encrypted transmission. For your protection, never put your credit card number or other sensitive information in unencrypted email. For added security, we use a trusted third party to process all credit card transactions. At no time do we store your credit card information on our system, and none of our employees have access to your credit card number. You will know that you are on an SSL secured page when the lock icon on the bottom of your Web browser (such as Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer) becomes locked. If your web browser is not locked, please contact Aplia prior to providing any sensitive information to us.
SSL is highly regarded to be a safe encryption method, but we fully understand if you are not comfortable entering your credit card information online. In that event, please contact Aplia's payment support and we will provide you with information on how to phone or fax your order.
If you have trouble purchasing securely at our web site, then you may be behind a firewall or using a proxy server that doesn't allow for secure transactions. If that is the case, then you should contact Aplia's payment support to phone or fax your order.
System and application activity logs are another mechanism Aplia uses to attempt to protect our systems and your information. These logs are reviewed and any anomalies or discrepancies are investigated.
